Sustainable commitment

EURwanda Handcraft Foundation eV

A close country partnership has existed between Rwanda and Rhineland-Palatinate since 1982. The spirit of this so-called grassroots partnership thrives on encounters, personal commitment, and direct, needs-based assistance. We specifically chose to work with Rwanda because this small East African country is determined and serious about working toward change and is committed to education.

Rwanda is one of the safest countries in Africa, despite, or perhaps because of, its turbulent recent history. Its handling of this history is exemplary. We firmly believe that we can learn from this and prepare ourselves for the future. It has developed into a prosperous Central African state and is working purposefully on its transformation from an agrarian country to a knowledge-based, middle-income economy. To this end, Rwanda is seeking partners to support its efforts in the field of education, particularly in establishing and expanding its vocational training system.

Our sustainability projects

We are currently preparing to develop a digital craftsman campus and would like to create an international, cross-trade information center, meeting place and assessment center for the crafts sector in Rwanda in the future: the Junior Talent House of Handcraft.

TOPFIT FÜRS EHRENAMT

1. Junior Talent House

A digital trade fair where we present nine skilled trades and answer a variety of questions about these professions.

2. DigiHandCraft Campus

A digital educational platform for nine skilled trades. The mission here is to discover talent and raise awareness of skilled trades.

3. Top fit for volunteering

Increasing young people's interest through companies, for one of the 50 partnership associations in Rhineland-Palatinate and between Rhineland-Palatinate and Rwanda.

4. Social Education Project Rwanda

For us, hands-on learning and simultaneous support of local nonprofit organizations and projects means: We share skilled handcraft!

With and for young craftspeople from Germany and vocational students from Rwanda: This project offers young craftspeople a unique opportunity to engage in temporary professional and social activities in Africa and to experience the multifaceted Rwandan culture in a unique way. The focus is on encounters, exchange, and collaboration in small-scale social craft projects. Join us!

5. Day Care Facility Program

Our pilot project involves establishing a day care facility program at the Tigo Center for approximately 40 children—both HMP and non-HMP children. The day care facility program will operate six days a week, Monday through Saturday, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Mission + Goals

We are convinced that sharing knowledge and skills is an effective, preventative, and sustainable way to ensure a peaceful and prosperous future. We are a group of nonprofit-minded women and men from the skilled trades, guilds, companies, social institutions, foundations, associations, and private individuals who are committed to the idea of a just and sustainable world for all.

Win-win situation

When young craftspeople from Europe exchange expertise with young Rwandan vocational students and dedicate themselves to a charitable project together, this leads to mutual benefits. Personal acquaintance, the exchange of knowledge and culture, experiences, and skills contribute to mutual understanding and broaden the perspective on new things. This supports young people in finding their own personal goals and looking to the future with confidence and responsibility.

1. Joint social commitment of young craftsmen from Europe and Rwanda

  • Doing good based on needs

  • Exchange experiences and expertise

  • Building mutual understanding and reducing prejudices

  • Demand and promote social skills

  • Overcoming boundaries and working together on social projects on equal terms

  • Help for self-help in the field of education and training in the skilled trades

Social commitment in the craft sector

Our goal is to expand our social engagement and work together on projects. We want to share our experiences and convince others that it's worthwhile to engage and share volunteer work across borders.

Social engagement in education is an investment in the future.

3. Rwanda - a conscious decision

Rwanda has developed into a prosperous Central African state and is working purposefully on its transformation from an agrarian country to a knowledge-based, middle-income economy. To this end, Rwanda is seeking partners to support its efforts in the field of education, particularly in establishing and expanding its vocational training system.

4. Education creates the future

Crafts can make a significant contribution to eliminating the root causes of displacement in Africa. With a good vocational training, young people can build a future for themselves, support their families, and strengthen the local economy.

UN Agenda 2030

With our social education project, we are making an active contribution to achieving the 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We encourage our participants from Rwanda and Europe to volunteer on social projects in Rwanda. They learn from each other in a practical way through on-the-job experience. Under the guidance of experts, the young people will lay the foundation for the Junior Talent House of Handcraft. An international information, meeting, and assessment center for all craft sectors will be created.

17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations

High-quality education and partnerships to achieve the goals are two targets in the "2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development," which the UN General Assembly adopted at the Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015 to improve the world. The Agenda is a kind of action plan for "transforming the world for the better" in the sense of a sustainable transformation of society, economy, and environment by the year 2030.

The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with its five core messages of the 17 UN Goals: People, Earth, Development, Peace and Partnership, guides all our activities:

Social education project: For Rwanda, in Rwanda.

After ten years of successful collaboration between young German painters and Rwandan vocational students, we have been integrating and bringing together other trades since 2019. In doing so, we are also raising awareness of the shortage of young talent in Europe and are committed to providing fair opportunities for young Africans.

We have been hosting trips to Rwanda with young craftspeople since 2013. The experience has always been positive and the success has been tremendous. Our social and continuing education initiative has received numerous awards. We are particularly proud of the Herrmann Schmidt Prize for innovative vocational training. We bring young craftspeople from Europe and Rwanda together and give them the opportunity to work together on something concrete and charitable, to contribute their craftsmanship, to learn from and about each other, and to engage in social activities.

Due to the positive response to previous trips, we have decided to continue our collaboration and the craft and cultural exchange even after the pandemic. The cross-sector project will begin at the end of October 2023. Young craftspeople from Europe will travel to Rwanda to exchange ideas about crafts and culture with young Rwandan apprentices and to work together on social projects using their own skills. In doing so, you will also get to know the country, people, and culture of Rwanda.

Doing good together!

We are convinced that social engagement has a positive impact on the image of the skilled trades industry as a whole. It will motivate young people in Europe and Rwanda to choose a skilled trades apprenticeship. With this project for social education in Rwanda and Europe, we are building bridges and overcoming borders, combating racism, and enhancing the image of skilled trades. Today's apprentices will be tomorrow's teachers!
